OS X Leopard Quicklook

Now that I’ve had a little time to play around with Leopard, I wanted write a quick post for those considering upgrading. (Speaking of upgrades, I chose the default, and it worked smoothly on my MacBook Pro.)

First, and most relevant to this site, Numbers runs very well under Leopard, and even appears to launch a little faster. I don’t have anyway to test this, it’s just a feeling.

My favorite new feature is quick look. If you spend a few days using this, you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Couple it with the new cover flow view, and you may find yourself doing the same thing I did: actually looking back through all the junk I have collected over time. You get a different feeling about it when you’re seeing thumbnails fly by, as apposed to looking at a plain text listing.

My next favorite feature is Spaces. This was surprising to me, as I had tried other screen virtualization software in the past and found it unappealing. Well, leave it to Apple to do it right! Spaces is a huge help if you are a MacBook or MacBook Pro user.

Time Machine is cool, and will probably save many people a ton of grief in the future, as it actually makes you want to backup. Fortunately, I haven’t had a need to use it to recover files yet. One note for power users: Time Machine backups are not bootable, like those produced by SuperDuper.

Mail, Preview, and TextEdit also are much improved over Tiger, and there are many more tweaks and improvements.

You can read about all the new features on Apple’s Leopard site.
