This is a simple and elegant invoice template for Numbers.

Usage

Usage is fairly straight forward, but you should be aware that there is a hidden column (D) in the Item and Description table. This field is summed in the subtotal cell in the Tax and Totals table. You can additional fields to the Item and Description table, but you will need to adjust your formulas.

Update: When I tested this template in Numbers for the iPad, I found out that it does not support hidden columns. Bummer. However, you can delete the now un-hidden summation column, and re-input a correct formula in the subtotal cell.

I haven’t tried this yet, but it looks interesting. Anyone using Numbers for heavy statistical work?

Risk Engine for iWork Numbers

Risk Engine links into iWork Numbers and Microsoft Excel 2008 spreadsheet models to allow you to run detailed Monte Carlo analyses with multiple inputs and outputs. The input values for the Monte-Carlo simulation can be directly modified by the user within the spreadsheet interface to allow for maximum flexibility within the simulation.

New in version 1.2.1:

Bug in exporting data into Microsoft Excel has been corrected

Improved user entry of statistical parameters to allow greater decimal accuracy

Improved export and reporting of output data by keeping the order of the data

Added the ability to switch between Monte-Carlo data model and the original data model

This template really shows off the ability to layout individual tables on a Numbers sheet.

The format is inspired by a resume David Seah put together using PowerPoint.  When I saw it, I thought that Numbers would be a great tool to do something similar, and I was right.

Basically, this is one sheet with eight separate tables, one for each section of the resume including:Â Name, Background, Experience, Education, Skills, Area of Interest, Software, and Contact Information.

Feel free to use it anyway you wish.

One more thing:Â You can use the built-in print to pdf functionality of OSX to produce an easy to e-mail version.

Here is a link to a pdf printed from the template: Numbers Resume Template.pdf

The Loan Grid Worksheet template allows you to quickly visualize alternatives when considering a loan.

For instance: You are considering a loan of $12,000 at 8% interest for a term of 60 months. There are many loan amortization spreadsheets that you could plug these numbers into and see that the payment amount would be $243.32 per month.

What if you wanted to know what the payment would be at 7.75% interest? You would change the interest rate in your sheet and see that payment would be $241.88 per month. Ok, how about $12,500 at 8%?

You can see that it can become tedious to look at a lot of loan scenarios with a standard loan calculator.

The Loan Grid Worksheet solves this problem by allowing you to look at 121 different loan payment scenarios simultaneously.

Usage:

The Loan Grid Worksheet consist of two tables.

The first table allows you to input your loan parameters such as Principal Amount, Interest Rate, and Number of Payments. It also includes two fields which effect how the grid table displays your scenarios: Interest Increment and Principal Increment. These are defaulted to 0.25% and $500 respectively, but you may want to change them depending on the type of loan you will be calculating.

The second table displays a grid with the payment results of your input, plus various scenerios based on your increment amounts.

The actual payment amount is displayed in the center of the gris and highlighted in yellow. Around this cell are varying payment amounts. For instance, in this screen shot, the payment amount is $243.32 based on a principal amount of $12,000, and interest rate of 8% and 60 payments. if you wanted to know how much an extra 0.25% interest would cost you per month on the same $12,000, you would find the $12,000 in the left-most column, then find the 8.25% rate in the top column. The cell where they intersect will be the payment amount. In this case, $244.76.

You can download the Loan Grid Worksheet below.

Compact Calendar 2012 version now available

This is a Numbers port of David Seah’s Compact Calendar.

David has developed a number of great productivity tools over the years including The Printable CEO Series. I highly recommend his site.

The Compact Calendar allows you to plan projects quickly, while envisioning time in a different manner than other tools such as a Gaant Chart. Specifically, you can look at an entire year at one time. Another nice feature is the different shading for weekends that helps to discourage utilizing those days in the planning process.

David has a very detailed post on how to use the Compact Calendar, so I will refer you there for usage instructions. My port is functionally the same. My reason for converting the template was so that I could embed it in another project.

Note: The formulas David uses in his template are not compatible with Numbers, so I made a lot of the changes manually.

Download:
Both the Sunday through Saturday and Monday through Sunday formats are included in this file on individual sheets. I have also included a link back to David’s site.

Forum member Steve has shared a cool Numbers spreadsheet template on the forums, that allows a user to use the A3 problem solving methodology to work through business process problems.

Steve describes the template:

This is another tool that I have found very useful in small (30 people) and large (40,000 people) companies. Again, it is based on Lean/6Sigma techniques.

The idea is to solve problems as a team by looking at the symptoms, understanding the business context, and identifying the root causes. You can grow or shrink the sheet to fit the paper. The original technique uses ISO A3 because it is a good size to use in a workshop, then later place on a team notice board.

The simple example in the spreadsheet is based on a real situation I encountered at the start of 2007.

My objective this time was to explore layouts, shapes, and alignment. Please forgive my choice of colours - I’m no graphic artist.

I hope you find the A3 technique useful.

The A3 system was originally created by the Toyota Motor Corporation and was named for the paper size on which it was printed: A3 (11” x 17”).

Toyota used the A3 methodology to help develop its famed Toyota Production System (TPS).

Steve includes both a blank template, and a fully completed example. The basic steps of the A3 method are (with Steve’s descriptions in parenthesis):

Theme or Background (What should be happening?)

Current Condition (What is happening? and Context)

Cause Analysis (Symptoms and Causes)

Forum member Bjoern has been kind enough to share his Project Template with Gantt chart.

The template includes: a project description area, a fuel-gauge style chart, and columns for WBS (Work Breakdown Statements), Tasks, Task Leads, Start Time, End Time, Duration (in days), and a neat in-cell chart.

You can view the original post, and download the sample file on the forums.

For those of you not familiar with Gantt Charts, they are described in Wikipedia as:

A Gantt chart is a popular type of bar chart that illustrates a project schedule. Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and summary elements of a project. Terminal elements and summary elements comprise the work breakdown structure of the project.

NEW VERSION ADDED 8/23/2007

One of the most glaring missing features of Apple iWork Numbers ’08 is the ability to get data into the sheet from outside sources. A very common need is to pull in stock quotes, then manipulate the data. While, I have not found a way to do it directly, I have developed a temporary method until Apple fixes this is later versions.

***Introduction***
The fix involves using a predefined stock table, a specifically formated Yahoo Finance url,<strike> and an Automator workflow that takes the url</strike> and retrieves a comma separated file, that is then opened in Numbers. Got that?

***File Content***
The zip file at the end of the post contains <strike>four</strike> two files:

* Read Me.rtf – This contains instructions similar to what you are now reading.
* <strike>Get-Quotes.app – A ready to run Automator app.
* Get-Quotes.workflow – The Automator workflow, in case you want to modify it.</strike>
* Stock Quotes.numbers – The sheet into which you will enter your data.

***Usage***
***Edited 8/23/2007***

1) Enter up to 15 symbols in the stock table.
2) The URL will build dynamically.
3) Click on the URL, which will open in your default browser.
4) Tell your browser to open the CSV file with Numbers, if it is not your default program.
5) Copy the resulting table into your stock table, and clean up any formatting.
6) Close the new window.

Note: If you want to learn more about the Yahoo url format, check out this awesome resource.

You are free to play around with this however you wish. However, since I just started the blog, I would appreciate you linking back to this article if you find it helpful.

Also, I want to keep the content fresh, so if you have any Numbers templates, tips or tricks you would like to share, drop me a line at: contact [at] numberstemplates.com

* Update 8/21/2007: Added pause to Automator action before deleting csv file. Thanks Timo!
* Update 8/23/2007: Made url clickable, Automator action no longer necessary.
