This is the 2012 update to the Numbers port of David Seah’s Compact Calendar. It is a “candy bar” style calendar that allows the user to see an entire year at a single glance.

The Compact Calendar is an excellent tool for quick project planning. Here is David’s description:

The Compact Calendar is a simple printable calendar that’s presented as a continuous candy bar of time. It fits on a single page, and is easy to print out for use during planning or group scheduling. Because the weeks are presented as one giant stack of available time, it’s easy to count weeks and figure out what can fit around meetings, holidays, and weekends.

See his site for a customizable Excel version.

The file has two week styles:
* Week starting on Sunday (traditional)
* Week starting on Monday

I also made some cosmetic adjustments this year to more closely match David’s work. The first day of the month now has a gradient fill, and the months are separated with a blue border.

JaxJason has posted another great – and highly useful – template in the forums. It is a “strip style” calendar like you would attach to the bottom of your monitor. I had one of these years ago and had forgotten how useful they were.

I have just printed mine out, and it is now firmly affixed to my monitor!

Here is how Jason describes his motivation for the project:

My office used to provide us with “strip calendars” that had sticky on the back and affixed nicely to the monitors. These were great and we didn’t’ realize how much we relied upon their ease of use and nice visibility until they announced they were not going to be supplying these again this year. So I made this template up.

Format the table as you see fit, adding logos, etc.. Have fun with it.

I am including a direct download link here, since we have been having some issues with downloads and Safari in the Forums.

Instructions:

You can change the year on the “Data-Set Year Here” tab, and the Print me tab will adjust.

It normally prints much better on legal size paper (US) on a laser printer.

Jason included borders on the rows above and below as cutting lines when printing multiple strips.

This template really shows off the ability to layout individual tables on a Numbers sheet.

The format is inspired by a resume David Seah put together using PowerPoint. When I saw it, I thought that Numbers would be a great tool to do something similar, and I was right.

Basically, this is one sheet with eight separate tables, one for each section of the resume including:Â Name, Background, Experience, Education, Skills, Area of Interest, Software, and Contact Information.

Feel free to use it anyway you wish.

One more thing:Â You can use the built-in print to pdf functionality of OSX to produce an easy to e-mail version.

Here is a link to a pdf printed from the template: Numbers Resume Template.pdf

Microsoft caught a lot of flack for it’s decision not to include VBA support in Office 2008, but apparently it would have put them too far behind schedule to get it in.

How long will Office users have to wait? Probably two to three years, if Microsoft follows their normal release schedule.

Macworld has an article detailing Service Pack 1 for Mac Office 2008. This service pack is supposed to improve performance and stability, as well fixing other small bugs. Specific improvements to Excel include:

. . . restores chart formatting options available in previous versions of Office and improves the spreadsheet program’s ability to alert you to potential compatibility issues when you save the workbook in a file format compatible with previous versions of Excel (including Excel for Windows). Changes made when you move or resize the formula bar will now be retained. Microsoft also improved support for secondary displays.

I fired up Office last night and checked for updates, but none were found. I’m not sure if they are slowly rolling this out through automatic update, or maybe they are requiring early adopters to download the Service Pack manually for right now.

Alternatively, some people are experiencing problems after they install the Service Pack, such as extended periods of CPU usage. Vincent Noel, the author of the "Bloody Fingers" blog, tracked the problem down to Spotlight attempting to index areas where the Service Pack was installed.

So, if you are an Excel power user, you may want to go ahead and download this Service Pack, otherwise, you may want to give Microsoft a little time to work the bugs out.

This is a Numbers port of David Seah’s Compact Calendar.

David has developed a number of great productivity tools over the years including The Printable CEO Series. I highly recommend his site.

The Compact Calendar allows you to plan projects quickly, while envisioning time in a different manner than other tools such as a Gaant Chart. Specifically, you can look at an entire year at one time. Another nice feature is the different shading for weekends that helps to discourage utilizing those days in the planning process.

David has a very detailed post on how to use the Compact Calendar, so I will refer you there for usage instructions. My port is functionally the same. My reason for converting the template was so that I could embed it in another project.

Note: The formulas David uses in his template are not compatible with Numbers, so I made a lot of the changes manually.

Download:
Both the Sunday through Saturday and Monday through Sunday formats are included in this file on individual sheets. I have also included a link back to David’s site.
