The Loan Grid Worksheet template allows you to quickly visualize alternatives when considering a loan.

For instance: You are considering a loan of $12,000 at 8% interest for a term of 60 months. There are many loan amortization spreadsheets that you could plug these numbers into and see that the payment amount would be $243.32 per month.

What if you wanted to know what the payment would be at 7.75% interest? You would change the interest rate in your sheet and see that payment would be $241.88 per month. Ok, how about $12,500 at 8%?

You can see that it can become tedious to look at a lot of loan scenarios with a standard loan calculator.

The Loan Grid Worksheet solves this problem by allowing you to look at 121 different loan payment scenarios simultaneously.

Usage:

The Loan Grid Worksheet consist of two tables.

The first table allows you to input your loan parameters such as Principal Amount, Interest Rate, and Number of Payments. It also includes two fields which effect how the grid table displays your scenarios: Interest Increment and Principal Increment. These are defaulted to 0.25% and $500 respectively, but you may want to change them depending on the type of loan you will be calculating.

The second table displays a grid with the payment results of your input, plus various scenerios based on your increment amounts.

The actual payment amount is displayed in the center of the gris and highlighted in yellow. Around this cell are varying payment amounts. For instance, in this screen shot, the payment amount is $243.32 based on a principal amount of $12,000, and interest rate of 8% and 60 payments. if you wanted to know how much an extra 0.25% interest would cost you per month on the same $12,000, you would find the $12,000 in the left-most column, then find the 8.25% rate in the top column. The cell where they intersect will be the payment amount. In this case, $244.76.

Forum member Yogimartin has posted his personal finance template on the forums. It is very detailed, and weighs in at a whopping 3.9 MB unzipped. **Fair warning: you need a fast Mac to run this.**

It allows the user to track their checking, savings, credit cards, investments and real estate by month. All of the monthly data is consolidated in two report sheets. This is a big upgrade for anyone looking for more firepower than our Checking Account Register.

NEW VERSION ADDED 8/23/2007

One of the most glaring missing features of Apple iWork Numbers ’08 is the ability to get data into the sheet from outside sources. A very common need is to pull in stock quotes, then manipulate the data. While, I have not found a way to do it directly, I have developed a temporary method until Apple fixes this is later versions.

***Introduction***
The fix involves using a predefined stock table, a specifically formated Yahoo Finance url,<strike> and an Automator workflow that takes the url</strike> and retrieves a comma separated file, that is then opened in Numbers. Got that?

***File Content***
The zip file at the end of the post contains <strike>four</strike> two files:

* Read Me.rtf – This contains instructions similar to what you are now reading.
* <strike>Get-Quotes.app – A ready to run Automator app.
* Get-Quotes.workflow – The Automator workflow, in case you want to modify it.</strike>
* Stock Quotes.numbers – The sheet into which you will enter your data.

***Usage***
***Edited 8/23/2007***

1) Enter up to 15 symbols in the stock table.
2) The URL will build dynamically.
3) Click on the URL, which will open in your default browser.
4) Tell your browser to open the CSV file with Numbers, if it is not your default program.
5) Copy the resulting table into your stock table, and clean up any formatting.
6) Close the new window.

Note: If you want to learn more about the Yahoo url format, check out this awesome resource.

You are free to play around with this however you wish. However, since I just started the blog, I would appreciate you linking back to this article if you find it helpful.

Also, I want to keep the content fresh, so if you have any Numbers templates, tips or tricks you would like to share, drop me a line at: contact [at] numberstemplates.com

* Update 8/21/2007: Added pause to Automator action before deleting csv file. Thanks Timo!
* Update 8/23/2007: Made url clickable, Automator action no longer necessary.
It also allows you to add extra payments, so you can run what if scenarios.

Usage:

Type your loan parameters into the “Enter Values” table, and the sheet will do the rest.

I have not been able to figure out a way to have tables grow or shrink automatically, so the amortization schedule displays 361 rows. Use a page range when printing loans with a term shorter than 30 years.
